A Step-by-Step Routine for Fixing Streaks, Banding and Faded Prints

Most print-quality problems follow a predictable pattern, and working through the checks in order saves ink, paper and frustration. Start with the simplest causes before assuming a cartridge or printer has failed.

1. Read the symptom carefully

Horizontal white lines or banding on an inkjet usually point to partially blocked nozzles. Faint vertical streaks or smudges on a laser printer more often suggest a worn drum, a dirty corona wire or toner that is running low. Missing colours on an inkjet usually mean a specific nozzle bank is clogged or a cartridge is empty. Prints that are faded overall can come from an economy or draft mode left switched on in the driver settings.

2. Check settings and paper first

  • Confirm the paper type in the print dialogue matches what is loaded. Glossy settings on plain paper, or the reverse, can cause smearing and poor ink absorption.
  • Turn off draft or toner-saving modes for important documents.
  • Try fresh, dry paper. Damp or curled sheets can feed unevenly and show blotches.

3. Run the built-in maintenance tools

Print a nozzle check or test page from the printer's menu or software. On an inkjet, run one cleaning cycle, then print the check again. Repeating cleaning many times in a row uses a lot of ink, so let the printer rest for a while between attempts. If nozzles stay blocked after a few cycles, our guide on why inkjet printheads clog explains the usual causes and how to prevent them.

4. Inspect the cartridges

Remove and reseat each cartridge and check that any protective tape has been fully removed. On a laser printer, gently rocking the toner cartridge from side to side can spread the remaining toner more evenly for a short time. If the problem started right after a replacement, check that the cartridge is the right model for your printer. Our article on checking cartridge compatibility covers what to look for.

5. Align and update

Misaligned printheads produce jagged text or double lines, so run the alignment utility after you swap cartridges. It is also worth installing the latest driver or firmware from the manufacturer, because updates sometimes fix colour or feed issues.

If none of these steps help, the fault may be mechanical, such as a damaged roller or a failing drum unit. At that point the printer's support documentation or an authorised service centre is the best next step.
