How to Use These Guides
Most printing problems fall into one of three stages: choosing a printer, keeping it supplied, and fixing it when output goes wrong. The guides here follow that same path, so it helps to start with the one that matches where you are rather than reading them in order.
If you are buying or replacing a printer
Start with inkjet vs. laser for the home. The right choice depends less on the printer's price than on how often you print, what you print, and how long the machine sits idle between jobs. Someone printing a few photos a month has very different needs from a household that prints homework and invoices every day.
If you are buying ink or toner
Before ordering, confirm the exact cartridge your model accepts. Printers in the same series often use different cartridges, and regional variants can differ too. Once compatibility is settled, look at page yield rather than the price tag alone. Yield figures are measured under standardised test conditions, so they are best used to compare cartridges against each other, not as a promise of how many pages you will personally get. The page yield guide explains how to work out a realistic cost per page.
If your prints look wrong
Faded colours, missing lines and banding on an inkjet usually point to dried ink in the printhead, especially after weeks without use. Streaks, smudges or repeating marks on a laser printer tend to come from the toner cartridge, drum or fuser instead. Identifying which technology you have narrows the fixes considerably. Try the gentle steps first, such as built-in cleaning cycles or reseating the cartridge, before anything more invasive, and check your manufacturer's instructions so you do not risk the warranty.
A few habits that prevent most problems
- Print at least a page every week or two on an inkjet to keep nozzles moist.
- Store spare cartridges sealed, upright where advised, and away from heat.
- Keep the printer's firmware and driver up to date, as updates can affect cartridge recognition.
- Use the paper type setting that matches what is actually loaded.
