Store Ink and Toner the Right Way

Keep unopened cartridges in their original sealed packaging until you need them. The packaging helps protect the ink or toner and preserves labels that identify the model and instructions. Store supplies in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight, heaters, and damp areas such as an unventilated basement or bathroom.

Follow any storage range or orientation printed on the package. Some cartridges are designed to remain in a particular position, and moving them carelessly can affect how material is distributed. Avoid leaving supplies in a hot car or near a window where temperatures can change quickly. Do not remove protective tape or seals early.

Use older compatible stock first when it is still sealed and has been stored according to its instructions. Check dates or shelf-life guidance on the packaging, but do not assume every cartridge has the same storage limit. If you are unsure whether a supply is still suitable, consult the printer or cartridge maker’s advice before opening it.

After installation, keep the printer in a stable environment and avoid unnecessary cartridge removal. If you must handle a cartridge, hold it by the sturdy outer casing and avoid touching contacts, nozzles, or the imaging surface. Good storage cannot guarantee perfect results, but it reduces avoidable exposure and makes it easier to identify supplies later.
